As we mark the 25th anniversary of the harrowing events of September 11, 2001, ZDF has unveiled a series of new documentaries that delve into the myriad narratives surrounding that fateful day. These productions not only recount the tragic events but also explore the wars, intelligence operations, and the societal divides that have emerged in the aftermath, alongside the persistent conspiracy theories that continue to circulate.

On that fateful day, 19 terrorists from the extremist group al-Qaida hijacked four commercial airliners. Two of these planes were flown into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, while another struck the Pentagon near Washington, D.C. The fourth plane crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after courageous passengers attempted to regain control from the hijackers.

Nearly 3,000 lives were lost that day, and the haunting images of the burning towers collapsing have left an indelible mark on global politics, security mindsets, and societal discourse.

In commemoration of this significant anniversary, ZDF, ZDFinfo, and 3sat have produced several new works. These productions not only reconstruct the events but also address the wars, intelligence agencies, torture, societal fractures, and the conspiracy theories that have followed the attacks.

“9/11 – The Hostages of Terror” Reveals a Lesser-Known Story

Five weeks before the attacks, eight foreign aid workers and 16 local staff members from Shelter Now International were arrested in Afghanistan by the Taliban, accused of Christian missionary work. They faced the dire threat of execution.

The landscape changed dramatically on September 11, as the U.S. prepared for military action against the Taliban, leaving the hostages caught in the crossfire. They endured over 100 days of captivity.

The two-part docudrama “9/11 – The Hostages of Terror” reconstructs this little-known saga through interviews, eyewitness accounts, and dramatized scenes. Due to the scarcity of photos and video footage from the prisons, the dramatization plays a crucial role in the narrative.

This production not only emphasizes political contexts but also portrays themes of fear, isolation, hope, and the psychological resilience of individuals under extreme pressure.

A particular suspicion—that the Taliban intended to use the detainees as leverage in future negotiations—is deliberately presented as an unverified conjecture. This distinction between plausible speculation and verified facts is especially vital in the context of 9/11.

The three-part series “9/11 – The Long Shadow of Terror” focuses on the political, societal, and personal repercussions of the attacks. Each episode is titled “Delusion,” “Pursuit,” and “Division.”

Part 1: Delusion

The first episode explores enemy images, radicalization, and the rise of the so-called Hamburg terror cell. It also addresses the consequences for Muslim communities, the rise of racist violence, and growing distrust in state institutions.

The film “Loose Change,” which has reached millions online with claims of discrepancies surrounding 9/11, is also discussed. The documentary illustrates why such narratives can thrive during times of crisis.

Part 2: Pursuit

The second episode examines the U.S.-declared “War on Terror,” focusing on secret prisons, torture, drone strikes, and significant breaches of legal principles.

Voices from individuals directly affected by these consequences include former CIA officer John Kiriakou, ex-drone operator Brandon Bryant, and Murat Kurnaz, who spent several years detained without charges at Guantanamo Bay.

Part 3: Division

The final episode reflects on long-term outcomes: Guantanamo, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, increasing distrust in governments, and political and societal radicalization.

The series utilizes AI-assisted illustrations in the style of graphic novels, particularly in sections where historical footage is absent or where personal memories are recreated. These scenes serve as visual reconstructions rather than original images.

The Persistence of 9/11 Conspiracy Theories

The scale of the attacks was almost unimaginable, shattering familiar certainties in mere hours. In the aftermath, significant failures by intelligence agencies, security authorities, and governments came to light.

This combination creates fertile ground for conspiracy theories: a monumental event seems to demand an equally monumental, fully controlled explanation. Coincidences, failures of authorities, and conflicting initial reports are interpreted as elements of a hidden agenda.

Moreover, images devoid of technical context can easily mislead. For instance, the collapse of a building may appear similar to a controlled demolition, even if no explosives were involved.

Were the Towers Demolished by Controlled Explosives?

One of the most prevalent claims is that the World Trade Center towers were not destroyed by the impact of the planes and ensuing fires, but rather by pre-planted explosives.

Investigations by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) reached a different conclusion. The planes damaged structural columns, destroyed fireproofing, and spread jet fuel across several floors. The resulting fires significantly weakened the unprotected steel structures, leading to the floors sagging and pulling the exterior supports inward, ultimately triggering the collapse.

Steel did not need to melt for this to occur; it loses a substantial portion of its load-bearing capacity at high temperatures. At around 1,000 degrees Celsius, its strength can drop to a fraction of its original value.

The collapse began in the areas severely damaged by the impact and fire, and no evidence of the typical explosive effects associated with controlled demolition was found.

What Happened to World Trade Center 7?

World Trade Center 7 was not struck by a plane but collapsed later in the afternoon of September 11, making it a focal point for numerous conspiracy theories.

However, WTC 7 was damaged by debris from the North Tower's collapse, leading to fires on several floors. With the water supply partially disabled, the sprinkler systems could not control the fires in critical areas.

According to NIST's investigation, the prolonged heat caused steel beams to expand, resulting in the failure of a vital connection in a load-bearing column. Internal collapses occurred first, followed by the visible exterior collapse.

It is often claimed that the building fell in "free fall." The investigation identified several phases of the collapse, with only a brief segment of approximately 2.25 seconds where the visible facade nearly matched free fall acceleration. By this point, the internal support structure had largely failed.

No credible evidence has been found to support claims of explosives being used to bring down WTC 7. An explosion that could destroy a crucial support would have been audible from a considerable distance, according to NIST's calculations.

Did a Plane Really Hit the Pentagon?

Another assertion is that a missile, not a passenger plane, struck the Pentagon.

This is countered by radar data, flight recorder records, eyewitness accounts, aircraft debris, and the identification of victims. American Airlines Flight 77 was hijacked by five terrorists and crashed into the Pentagon on September 11, 2001.

The absence of large airplane parts in many publicly available images does not substantiate claims of a missile strike. The airplane hit the massive building at high speed, resulting in much of it being destroyed or penetrating the structure.

Was United Airlines Flight 93 Shot Down?

Flight 93 crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, with conspiracy theories suggesting it was shot down by the U.S. military.

Analysis of the cockpit voice recorder, flight data, phone calls from the plane, and the crash site reveals a different narrative. After learning about the other attacks, passengers attempted to retake the cockpit, prompting the hijackers to crash the plane.

No credible evidence has been found to support claims of a military shoot-down. Flight 93 was likely intended to hit another target in Washington.

Did the U.S. Government Plan or Allow the Attacks?

The 9/11 Commission documented numerous failures: agencies inadequately shared information, warning signs were misinterpreted, and security structures were unprepared for such an attack.

While these failures warrant criticism, they do not provide evidence that the U.S. government planned or knowingly allowed the attacks to happen.

Extensive investigations by the FBI and the 9/11 Commission attribute the planning and execution to Osama bin Laden, al-Qaida, and the 19 hijackers involved. No credible evidence exists to suggest a conspiracy involving American authorities.

Legitimate Criticism Is Not a Conspiracy Theory

The fact-checking surrounding 9/11 should not lead to the trivialization of genuine governmental misconduct. Following the attacks, individuals were detained without due process, prisoners were tortured, and far-reaching measures were enacted that compromised civil liberties.
