XVIII – The Moon
After the confused dreams at the center of the night, you find yourself in a land where it is always dark. The Moon manifests, guiding you through the depths of the unconscious and the mysteries of the soul.

After the confused dreams at the center of the night, you find yourself in a more exciting and wild dream than ever, in a land where it is always dark, with a starless blue sky, everything is silence. Only after walking towards two towers on the horizon do you see a lake with dark, calm waters, the night air seems to reverberate; perhaps this is not a night but an aquarium containing a dreamlike landscape.
Could it all be fake? Are you breathing humid air or water? Two dogs howl at something illuminating the landscape, and from the lake emerges a creature from the abyss. The creature, you, and the two dogs gaze together at the rising of a silver face from the bottom of the aquarium, in the depths of the dream. The moon manifests, it has a luminous and smiling face, it looks into your eyes and everything becomes more delirious, confused, beautiful, and hypnotic.
"Listen to my voice!" says the Moon, "it is within you and emerges from the heart of the night, from your abysses, from the black sky of your dreams." You obey her, taking the path that goes between the mountains, passing the black tower and the white one, walking slowly towards the edge of the world, beyond the abysses of the Moon, and you fall into them. Dogs, humans, abyssal creatures, and collapsing towers, everything blends and becomes watery, emotional, familiar, and connected.
Every dream becomes real, every nightmare follows you into the night lake, all the beasts sing to the sky, you howl at the silver face that here is the terrible and beautiful lady of the night, your night which is also all the nights of the world.
The Arcana XVIII, The Moon, is one of the most enigmatic and profound cards of the Tarot, traditionally representing the world of the unconscious, intuition, hidden emotions, and inner mysteries. Its energy is linked to the night, dreams, illusions, psychic sensitivity, and the invisible processes of the soul. In classic Tarot, especially in the Tarot of Marseille, the card shows a luminous moon above a night landscape, two animals facing the sky, a crab emerging from the water, and a path that crosses two towers, which in the shown card has been replaced by a mermaid (Note: in the deck "The Tarot of Fortune" by De Vecchi). Each element symbolically evokes the journey into the unknown and the search for inner truth; after all, the Moon has always been associated with mystery cults, magic, and the sacred feminine. In ancient civilizations, it represented the cyclicality of life, fertility, intuition, and the power of invisible worlds.
Tarot Meanings
This arcana often indicates a moment of uncertainty or psychological transformation, where what is hidden must gradually emerge. It is not a negative card and is never entirely positive; its function is to guide the individual through inner darkness so that they can develop greater awareness, intuition, and spiritual understanding.
From a tarot perspective, it is an ambivalent card, capable of expressing both high intuition and confusion and deception. Its meaning depends on the context of the reading, the nearby cards, and the inner maturity of the person involved; in general, it represents everything that is hidden, blurred, or not yet fully understood.
Positive Aspects: It indicates strong emotional sensitivity, creative imagination, deep intuition, and openness to spiritual or unconscious dimensions. It is the card of artists, visionaries, and those who can perceive subtle realities beyond material appearance. It can signal revealing dreams, mediumistic abilities, empathy, inspiration, and connection with one’s inner world. In love, it suggests intense romanticism, emotional depth, and an almost telepathic bond between people. In work, it favors artistic, psychological, spiritual, or creative activities. On a personal level, it invites one to listen to their intuition rather than just rationality.
It also speaks to inner transformation; when it appears in a difficult moment, it suggests that the person is going through a phase of psychological growth where old fears, memories, or emotions are emerging to be understood and integrated. It often indicates a special sensitivity to symbols, signs, and synchronicities.
Negative Aspects: This arcana can indicate illusions, unconscious fears, anxiety, emotional instability, and self-deception. The person may be experiencing a murky situation, being a victim of lies, or unable to distinguish reality from fantasy. In some cases, it represents emotional manipulations, hidden betrayals, secrets, or ambiguous situations. Psychologically, it can highlight mental confusion, paranoia, excessive emotionality, or escape from reality. In love, especially if in "problematic positions," it can indicate opaque relationships, emotional fears, jealousy, or deep misunderstandings. In work, it can signal hidden information, professional uncertainty, or deceptive promises. Spiritually, it warns of the risk of getting lost in illusions or fantasy without maintaining balance and clarity.
The fundamental lesson of the card is to learn to walk in darkness without being dominated by fear, developing discernment and trust in one’s authentic intuition.
Evolutionary and Spiritual Meanings
This arcana, with its hypnotic ambiguity, represents the journey of the human being through the depths of the unconscious; it is the moment when consciousness abandons rational certainties to confront emotions, fears, memories, and hidden aspects of one’s soul. The Moon teaches that authentic growth also passes through doubt, uncertainty, and inner darkness; in this sense, it invites us to develop intuition, inner listening, and spiritual sensitivity. In many esoteric traditions, it represents contact with the astral plane, the symbolic world, and messages from the unconscious; dreams, visions, and subtle perceptions become tools for personal knowledge.
From an evolutionary perspective, this card often indicates a phase of psychological purification. Old wounds, childhood fears, or emotional blocks emerge to be transformed; it is not a simple process, but necessary to achieve greater authenticity.
A few words should be spent on its numerology and position in the sequence of the deck; in fact, the eighteenth major arcana, whose sum of numbers is 9 (1 + 8), recalls the vibrations. The number 18 in numerology symbolizes transformation, intuition, karma, altruism, emotional sensitivity, and inner rebirth. Its affinity with 9 leads us to meanings such as compassion, spirituality, inner evolution, and initiations based on confronting one’s shadows and illusions. The moon is a bridge of consciousness between the Stars, arcana XVII, and the Sun, arcana XIV, which will illuminate the path towards Judgment and the World.
Esoteric Symbols and Mysteries
The Moon is one of the arcana richest in esoteric symbolism. Each element of the card represents a hidden level of consciousness and the initiatory path; the Moon itself symbolizes reflected light, that is, indirect and mysterious knowledge; unlike the Sun, it does not illuminate clearly; it suggests, veils, and transforms.
The two animals present in the card, often a dog and a wolf, represent the duality of human nature; the dog recalls the controlled and civilized part of the human being, while the wolf represents the primitive and wild instincts; both observe the Moon, a symbol of the invisible force that influences emotions and psyche.
The crab or crustacean that emerges from the water indicates the birth of consciousness from the depths of the unmanifested but also the slow evolutionary process of the soul; it is, of course, a reference to the sign of Cancer and the connection with the roots and emotional abysses of the past.
Water represents the subconscious, memory, and the astral world.
The two towers mark the boundary between the material and spiritual worlds; the central path is the initiatory journey of the human being towards inner knowledge.
