Today marked another significant occasion as the Reservistenkameradschaft Sommerkahl held its annual collection for the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge. This event was my second participation, not including the collections I took part in during elementary school within my family.
The mission of the Volksbund is profoundly important. Almost every family has experienced the loss of a loved one in the two World Wars, and maintaining the cemeteries serves as a poignant reminder of the countless lives lost due to conflict. This reflection hopefully deters leaders worldwide from initiating wars, though it must be acknowledged that such tragedies still occur.
The collection process unfolded in a structured manner. We gathered in our service uniforms—mine being the striking blue attire—at designated cemeteries. After receiving collection boxes and identification badges, we positioned ourselves at various entrances. As attendees arrived for the All Saints' Day service, many generously contributed, and some shared brief conversations about their own family members lost in the wars.
